History of Italy

The entire Peninsula of what is now called Italy was not called so until around 1st century BC. At that time, Italy was under the control of Rome, and remained so for the next few centuries; the Roman rule ended aroud the 5th century. By 1946, Italy had voted to become a republic, thus leading to their current three branches of government.

Geography of Italy

Italy is located on a peninsula in Europe, extending out into the Meditteranean Sea, at 42˚N, 50˚E. Italy's capital and largest city is Rome; other large cities include Milan, Naples, Genoa, and Venice. Italy is mostly made up of mountains, with its highest point being Mont Blanc de Courmayeur (4,748 m), and its lowest point being the Mediterranean Sea (0 m).
